When I think of old truck, these come to mind. Not old pick ups.
Imagine pulling into the cruise night with this, grinding gears and all.

I’d love to get an old truck like that, remove the fifth wheel coupling, throw a flat bed on it with some ramps and viola the ultimate car hauler/home depot run truck

One of my HS jobs had me driving a ‘65 or ‘66 International Harvester Loadstar with manual steering and a steering wheel about the size of a Kia Rio.
This job also let us go shirtless so long as we weren’t inside, or working directly with the customer and had me lifting and carrying 50-120 pound sacks of feed all day.
I went back for my senior year ripped and tan.

My dad was just asking our pastor (former truck driver) if he remembered Thermodyne Macks, only last night. My dad worked on these out in Texas in the early ‘70s.

A local motorcycle shop has an old Loadstar as their shop truck. The water pump died and it took a month to find another one, I think it wound up being in Oklahoma or something.

Our shop got to the point where we were rebuilding the parts more often then trying to replace them. The parts are out there, though.
Our other trucks were an F-450 rollback, an L-something rack bed with a 460 gasser and a C6500 Duramax.
I wrote start-up and cool-down instructions on laminated cards and stuck them to the middle of the steering wheels. Too many of us kids were used to our parents’ cars where you just turn a key and drive away.
At 17 (I turned 18 that August) I reworked the entire operation there choosing trucks based on distance, load and load-stacking to make our days more efficient and increased fleet mpg by 1.5. My boss loved me. It seems simple enough, but prior to that, they were just throwing a load onto the trucks of the guy that knew where it was going and whatever truck he had grabbed when he got in that morning.

You’d think that stuff should be common sense, but it really doesn’t seem to be. I can see why your boss loved you, that’s way more than most 17 year olds are getting done at jobs

When I first started it was essentially , “I’ve been here longer, so I get the truck with the working air-conditioner.” Which meant the guy tooling around town with the lightest load and shortest route was using our newest, highest weight-rated truck was also the oldest guy with the most physical limitations (he had a bad back and wore a brace for it.)
We put him on lighter loads in the gas truck after paying to fix the A/C in it. That was a huge change to overall fleet mileage as we now had a C6500 doing the long distance and heavier load hauls, much better equipped for it than a gas V8 with a 4-speed manual.
